in tiny tank my four fish friends
live happily; like summer winds
they flit and sway to pass their time,
each perfect in its small design.
there's ponch and john, with tiger stripes,
and otis with his round mouth wipes
the tank and cleans the plants
that float in underwater dance.
and summer, yellow as the sun,
had a mate but now is one.
they know when i approach the tank
-my footsteps make the water shake-
it's feeding time! that's twice a day.
excitedly they swarm and play
around the top where i drop in
their flakes, and let the fun begin!
fins ashimmer, scales aglow
how was i to ever know
the great affection i now hold
for four fish friends with hearts of gold?
now really, fish are kind of creepy.
so i chose mine carefully and named them to make me smile.
ponch and john? you can't ignore the CHiP's, man. their huge black
eyes remind me of aviator sunglasses.
summer's mate was star. they were my redneck friends.
but now summer swims alone, a sad sad tragedy, and
star went swimming in a circle...
otis kicks ass, that's all.

I have always know that your affection for the fish tank is rather large!
(yellow is hard to read)
I love this one! However, it does cement my image of you as a living Snow White, flittering around the house and singing to her small friends.
Anyway, I used to think fish were kind of weird too, but they grow on you. Factory Worker had a goldfish named Sushi and he/she (shim?) lived forever.
The librarian read this one and the pot-belled stove poem last night and loved both of them. Just thought I'd share, because she'll never post a comment by herself.
Ok, I meant "pot-bellied" not "pot-belled" but it's 7:30 in the morning, so what do you expect?
you know that pot-belled stove hurt my back, carrying that thing up the stairs was painful. I would have liked to have seen the driver and the librarian haul it up 3 flights!
yea, i like being thought of as snow white!! and i really do sing to all of my tiny friends. my fishies have their special feeding song and finn likes it when i sing "you are my sunshine". (penny pretends not to care, but i know she does; we have our little moments as well, though few and far between.)
i'm glad the librarian enjoyed the latest installments. i intend on writing several poems dedicated to my small animal friends (a la snow white), so she should continue to check the blog. there will be more posted shortly...
and installment #2 is coming when . . .?
Seriously, the word "installment" implies that more will follow...
